If you are to the first player to the left of the big blind, then you will be on the first position prior to the flop. Looking around the poker table, this position is the hardest to play. This position is called “under the gun” for some reason.

This position is still a very early position even after cards are revealed on the flop and that does not improve the total scenario for you. You have to keep in mind that when you are on this position, you need to play only your premium hands. You cannot use the other hands you usually play when in other positions.

The most obvious reason why most players dread the first position prior to the flop is that you do not have a clue what will the other players behind you will do. You will not have a good chance of reading what they have and what they plan to do since you are on the action first. In case you limp into the pot with a mediocre hand and another player raises, you will most likely be forced to throw away the cards and fold. In case you decide to raise when you get a good hand, you will have a tough choice when someone pushes some more chpis in the middle and re-raises.

Make sure you only play premium hands like KQ, AQ, AK, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, and AA. You can also play small pocket pairs from time to time.

If you are playing on a tight table, you’re under the gun, and you have a premium hand, what you need to do is raise. If the gang is quite aggressive, then be more careful and just call. It is most likely to happen in a very aggressive table that another player will raise before the flop which in response you can smooth call or re-raise. The scenario on a tight table is quite different, you cannot allow more players to see the cards on the flop since this decreases your possibilities of winning.

Under the gun position requires that you prevent losing when you have big hands and this is more important than winning the big hands. Be careful when in this position since more often than not, this often result to losing bigger pots.

Small ball in poker was first coined by Dan Harrington in one of his poker strategy books. Later on, the term got more popular thru poker tips and poker strategy videos of Daniel Negreanu.

Small ball is actually the style of play which makes use of a wider range of cards and being really aggressive while putting only small bets or raises so you do not lose a lot of money when things don’t work out. It is often the strategy which can be effective in multi-table poker tournamnets over sit-n-go’s or cash games.

How can it be effective

Small ball poker helps create a loose image on the poker table. Doing this makes you a recipient of a lot of actions from other players since they will see you as being a loose aggressive poker player and will see you more often as bluffing your way to the chips.

In the long run, you will be making some good money since a lot of opponents will be going against you even with their bad hands. Your opponents will not see you as a player who holds strong hands and challenge you to the pot even with their mediocre cards.

In order for your small ball poker strategy to work, your opponents must believe your loose image that you want to project. If they do not take you as that, better be back to your tight aggressive gameplay.

Small ball poker strategy

When doing small ball poker, you need to make most of your position and play as much of the cards that you get as you can. It will not be very effective if you are in an early position and try to play it small ball as you might end up getting called and end up losing a lot of money.

You need to know which starting hands you want to play and know that these hands are premium or at least have a potential. You want cards that you can play after the flop. Go for suited cards and connected cards.

Small ball poker can be profitable during the early parts of poker tournaments or cash games.

One best way to learn the game is by learning it with your friends. You can do this by organizing poker nights at home with a few chit chats and of course some food and wine.

You can play poker from one home to another making a tour of your circle of friend’s places. You can go from betting a few pennies, a few dollars, to hundreds of bucks. One night per week is great. We list down some things which can help you spice up your home poker a bit.

Automatic shuffler

Automatic shuffler is a gift from heaven for you and your poker buddies. Whatever style of poker you and your friends play, the shuffler will come in very handy. The reasons are self explanatory. You can get an automatic shuffler from around $300 that will look good on your poker table. There are also cheaper ones for around $150.

Tournaments

Organize a tournament among yourselves and determine the amount of payout. You can use some online poker software to determine the prize structure. If you have only a small circle of less than 10 players then things might be easier if you make it a winner take it all thing. Competition will be really nice.

Satellite format

You can use your own tournament to build a fund which can send one or some of your poker buddies to local or even bigger poker tournaments. Set aside some money from your buy-ins so you can have a seed fund.

Home poker games need not to be a routine. You can do a lot of stuff to make it fun for everyone.

I like playing online and live, but now that Full Tilt is dead I like PokerStars for poker and Maple Online casino for the other games!

There is a lot of mathematics involved when determining the variance in poker, but for anyone to understand what a variance is, the concept should be explained in a simplistic, non-mathematical method.
Simply put, the variance in poker is the ups and downs of the game. Settling with that explanation, though, would be overly simplistic and not very complete.

A more detailed description of the variance is this: it is the difference between the average amount of money a player is expecting to win in the long run and the results s/he is seeing over a short period of time. For example, if you expect to win $200 on average but you lose $1000 instead, this is due to variance (or your lack of knowledge about it).

Variance in a game of poker can only be monitored and deduced over a long period of time. If you’ve only been playing poker for a day, it’s close to impossible to compute the variance of your games. Variance is also a tricky value to compute because it is controlled by one thing: one’s stroke of luck.

Aside from your luck, though, the variance is also controlled by your playing style, the poker game itself, the betting type and the game type. A more aggressive player would have a greater variance and is more likely to lose more money.

The game type Omaha has lesser variance compared to Hold’em poker. If the betting type is limitless, the variance of the game also increases (which means Limit Hold’em has higher variance than Pot Limit Hold’em). On a general note, the higher the risks involved in the game, the bigger the variance.

When playing poker, you must be conscious of your poker image. It is basically how others will perceive you as a poker player and is determined by how you play the game.

Most of the time, other players will read you by how you play your cards. Other factors which may affect your image may include how you behave on the table in front of your opponents.

Other players can judge if you are a tight player if you are the silent type on the table. Be talkative and enjoy the game, and you can be perceived with a loose table image.

Your poker table image is very important because other players will base on it the strategies they will use against you.

When you have a loose table image, most of the time, other players will be willing call and raise against your bets. They will have a thinking that you have lower standards when deciding if you will play the cards that you have.

You might be a money magnet when you play a big hand if you have a loose image. Your image will disguise your bets, raises, re-raises, or all ins and lead them to a trap.

On the other hand, a tight image will lead other players to be more conservative to play against your call. Your opponents might think that you have a good or big hand every time you throw in those chips.

Playing tight may lead you to premium or good hands. This may mean increasing your chances of raking in the money.

An advice whether you need to play a tight or loose image is impossible. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. It is up to you to decide if you can use a table image, and if the other players really care about how you play your game. Sometimes, it’ll pay to look as loosey goosey as Sam Farha – at other points, you’ll want people to think you’re tight like Howard Lederer. Mix up your game, and take down the big pots!
